Microsoft accidentally leaks release of the next Windows update

Microsoft is reportedly working on the next feature update for Windows 10. And according to the latest leak, it appears the update will arrive much later than anticipated. In a new Chromium code commit, information published by a Microsoft software engineer suggests that the next Windows 10 feature update could arrive in June.

Now, this might refer to the 21H1 update, which would likely be a small update that’s not supposed to bring major overhauls. Instead, this update would focus on under the hood improvements to refine the experience with Windows 10 operating system, as opposed to bringing major new features. As Microsoft would likely release a new big update (Windows 10 21H2) this fall, with a focus on adding new features, along with a complete overhaul of the interface.

If you’ve been following Microsoft’s typical release schedule, the first major update for Windows 10 usually arrives in May. For instance, Windows 10 version 1903 and version 2004 updates were rolled out to users in the last week of May. Hence, it’s very likely that Windows version 21H1 will be released in May 2021 and gradually rolled out to more users in June 2021.

That said, it’s also possible that Microsoft could be referring to Windows 10 21H2 “Sun Valley” update, which is expected to get the RTM (release to manufacturer) status in June.

Also, it appears that starting this year, the spring release would likely be used for smaller updates, whereas the following update later this year is expected to bring some big changes to Windows 10. The forthcoming fall 2021 Windows 10 update is expected to bring major changes such as new Start Menu, Action Center, Taskbar, and inbox applications. Besides, we can expect performance and dark theme ‘consistency’ improvements as well.

As for the next update expected to land in June, no details on exactly what we can expect have been revealed so far. Most of the changes, would likely be under the hood improvements That said, one of the major changes we could see with the next update is a new section for the Graphics Card in the Settings app. Besides, the update is also likely to bring native support for DNS over HTTPS (DOH).
